Our Company

Western Pacific Marine Ltd. and its sister company, Harbour Cruises Ltd. (formerly Harbour Ferries Ltd.) have been in business since 1979 and 1911 respectively.

In our history we have achieved many "heritage" landmarks such as in 1924, building the first diesel engine passenger vessel on the West Coast of North America - the MV Harbour Princess. Beginning in 1933 we operated the only floating post office in the British Empire, the Burrard Inlet Traveling Post Office.

More recently we have provided service on a large scale for corporations like Western Forest Products (now Western Pulp), where we built and supplied a 500-passenger vessel for the reconstruction of the Woodfibre Pulp Mill (1982-1985). We still operate a 360-passenger car ferry for that company to this day.

In 1986, we supplied six out of the seven vessels servicing Expo 86. We built two new vessels for that service and rebuilt four existing vessels. During the 165-day fair, we were rated by the official panel as the most trouble free and preferred mode of transportation of the entire fair. We carried in excess of 3,000,000 passengers within the site or between the site and the Canadian Pavilion. That number excludes the passengers carried on our other runs.

From 1991 to 1992 we owned and operated the company, Royal Sealink Express, which operated three 39 meter catamarans, on behalf of Kvaener Fjellstrand AS. Royal Sealink Express provided fast ferry passenger-only service between Vancouver & Victoria, and Vancouver & Nanaimo. We were responsible for new vessel construction Transport Canada compliance, crewing, maintenance, reservations and catering.

In 1999 we purchased, upgraded and operated a 4000-ton, 1800 passenger American paddlewheeler for a Canadian casino company. We re-fitted it to Canadian safety and operational standards and placed it into service on the Fraser River.

We presently manage Barnston Island/Port Kells, for the Ministry of Transportation, Lasqueti/French Creek and Port McNeil/Alert Bay for the B.C. Ferry Corporation. For 18 years and until recently, we also served Prince Rupert/Kincolith for the B.C. Ferry Corporation. An access road was built and the ferry service subsequently terminated. In the past we had also serviced Newcastle Island for the Provincial Parks Branch, and provided relief at Blubber Bay, Texada Island as well as Crofton/Vesuvious for B.C. Ferry Corporation.

We also operated, until 2001 the popular Boat-Train Daytrip to Squamish with B.C. Rail and the Royal Hudson. Currently we offer private boat Charters, Scheduled Dinner Cruises, Indian Arm Luncheon Cruises, Harbour Tours, Howe Sound Brunch and Carolship Cruises in our Hospitality Division.

Another sister company, Just Right Catering does all of our catering as well as outside catering assignments for such events as the Vancouver International Marathon and Molson Indy.

We also own and manage two marinas in downtown Vancouver. The Harbour Cruises Marina operated since 1968 has 160 slips and a parking lot. The Coal Harbour Marina located in the newly developed Coal Harbour Waterfront has 220 luxury slips and 18 liveaboard berths. We also hold the leases for the retail space, restaurant and parking lot associated with the marina.
