Harrop Cable Ferry

Originally known as the Harrop-Longbeach ferry, service began on August 22, 1925 with a small four-car wooden cable scow. During 1937, it was replaced by another wooden scow that was moved by propellers, one at each end. The power unit was a 1931 Model "A" Ford engine bracketd to the side of the scow and cooled by the standard car radiator. In 1941 the engine was set down in the scow and a direct drive system was used until 1947. In that year a 21.3-metre (70-foot) single-lane steel cable barge was put into service.

By 1962 it was necessary to place a 27.4-metre (90-foot) 10-car two-lane cable ferry on the run to keep up with the demand for service. The earlier ferries at this site landed at a wedge-like wooden structure that was moved up or down the roadway as the river level changed. Because of the moving of the structure caused delays, the Ministry had exceptionally long ramps fitted on the ferry in 1962 and this eliminated the need for it.

Before the implementation of the ferry service the residents of Harrop had no access to the Province's road system. At that time travel to Nelson and to other points on Kootenay Lake and the River was by railway or by steamer, both operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway. In the early 90's, the present 3 lane 18 car ferry was placed into service because of the increasing demands.
