By
1962 it was necessary to place a 27.4-metre (90-foot) 10-car
two-lane cable ferry on the run to keep up with the demand
for service. The earlier ferries at this site landed at a
wedge-like wooden structure that was moved up or down the
roadway as the river level changed. Because of the moving
of the structure caused delays, the Ministry had exceptionally
long ramps fitted on the ferry in 1962 and this eliminated
the need for it.
Before
the implementation of the ferry service the residents of Harrop
had no access to the Province's road system. At that time
travel to Nelson and to other points on Kootenay Lake and
the River was by railway or by steamer, both operated by the
Canadian Pacific Railway. (Courtesy of: MOTH: Lake and River
Ferries, by Frank A. Clapp, 1991)
In the early 90's, the present 3 lane 18 car ferry was placed
into service because of the increasing demands.
