Glade Cable Ferry Service

Route: Across the Kootenay River on Highway 3A, 22.5 kilometres west of Nelson, to Glade.

Ferry service to Glade, on the south side of the Kootenay River, west of Nelson began in 1910. In that year the Doukhobor Society, whose members had settled at Glade, installed a reaction ferry scow in order to have access to the main road between Nelson and Castlegar. Later they replaced it with a pontoon-type reaction ferry.

In 1944, the West Kootenay Power and Light Company completed its Brilliant Dam which raised and stilled thewaters of the river at Glade. This made it impossible to operate a reaction ferry and for a time a rowboat was used then later on a barge and powerboat. The Ministry assumed responsibility for the crossing during 1955 when a single-lane, three vehicle cable ferry scow was put into use. Later the scow was widened to increase its capacity to five vehicles. An eight-car ferry barge was placed in service at the crossing in 1980. (Courtesy of: MOTH - Lake and River Ferries, by Frank A.
